Painting in the dining room isn't so bad, especially with pretty fresh flowers on the table. Thank you Batty, they are so beautiful that I think I might paint them. It made me feel all warm and nice and taken care of.
This Citrus Thinner is still toxic, just less then turpentine. I actually didn't even open it today. Most of the time I can paint with out it.
The Walnut Oil works just fine for cleaning my brushes while I'm working. The thing that messes me up is when I forget to wipe it out of the brush and start painting again. The Alkyd Medium is just going to take a little time to get comfortable with.
The main two foods I've been living off of are gummy bears and Detox tea. They just seem like foods appropriate for cleaning out the body. Well, maybe only the clear gummy bears.

So the citrus stuff replaces the turp, and the walnut oil replaces the liquin? Or the walnut oil replaces the turp as medium? Wha? I paint with one baby on my lap and the other two close by (exaggeration). Very interested in being less toxic. Pass the info on.....
I'm concerned about your walnut alkyd medium. Isn't the alkyd resin the toxic part? Liquin is just another brand name for alkyd resin.
Certainly, the citrus thinner and the turp-free walnut oil have made things less toxic. If the alkyd seems to be less irritating now, maybe it's a matter of quantity. Depending on the recipe, you're walnut medium is probably only 5 to 15% alkyd resin, as opposed to having an open quart bottle of liquin in the studio. Maybe there was no reaction to alkyd to begin with(?).
Just some thoughts...
So I clicked around and looked at aBfife's blog. Nice work. Anyway, she has a blog entry with a picture of a mummified cat. Mummification? That topic seems to follow you around like toilet paper on the sole of your shoe, Cass. You should totally delete this comment.
love that you're pairing gummy bears with detox tea. i dig how that stuff tastes....kinda funky, but yum. and i am SURE the white gummy bears are good for the whole detox thing!
aBfife- I've seen your work, nice! Okay so citrus stuff replaces turp but really soaking brushes in plain walnut oil or mineral oil replaces citrus stuff except when doing neccessary extreme brush cleaning. Gamblin galkyd medium or the Graham alkyd walnut oil medium replace liquin.
I wish you would have been at my lecture at UVU tonight, I talked about being an artist mom. Keep painting and keep that baby in your lap but get rid of the toxins. C
PS I want that mummified cat! Also, all of your Springville entries look prize winning to me.
Nigel- you are funny and now I'm going to have wacky dreams about mummified cats following me around or something.

You are nice, Mrs. Barney. I am going to revert to the inner student in me and do some research. I definitely do not want a toxic-house. The question is, can I really live without liquin?
I've used Walnut Oil for a few years now and I'm a big fan, but just so you know, it tends to slow drying time a bit. I kind of get impatient sometimes, but I love the creaminess of the walnut oil so I deal with it.
