Little Works on Paper

In music and painting, I've always loved getting lost in a story. These paintings start a narrative. I get excited every time I look at them. They are available at The Greenwich Gallery.

I received a personal invitation from Ballet West to paint a pair of pointe shoes for an upcoming auction and show. Thank you Ballet West! The shoes will be displayed along with several other artist's shoes, including my dad's, at the premier of Madame Butterfly.

I've been a little scared to touch them because they are so lovely, all pink and satin. I started with a list of ideas in my sketchbook, then did some drawing. I considered several alternative options but have come back around to painting an image on the slippers.

I'll just answer the question that surely every reader of this post is wondering right now, "yes, I did try them on and attempt to dance around." They are about two sizes too big for my feet, but that's not what made me unable to stand for more that just a second. Really, it hurts and I can't believe that those dancers can even stand up on them. It makes their performances even more amazing.

At the Barney House

This weekend in the studio I decided to make a garland for fall. I've been spray painting small plastic toys all summer. Everybody needs a hobby. Now the challenge is finding ways to use them. I dare say, this is just the beginning.

For two of our favorite Mormon missionaries, Dan embroidered messages on their white shirt tails. This one is for Elder Boswell in Tennessee. It's from a Bob Dylan song that he quoted at his missionary farewell.

You're gonna have to serve somebody,
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord

The Sun in our Hearts

Littlest Kitten has been pumping out some pretty nice drawings. She has an explanation for each object, even down to the colors of the figure's shirt and pants made from dye from the berries on the bushes and the fruit on the trees.

I met a very nice lady at our show in Cannon Beach in May, and she asked if she could use some of my artwork for the cover of this publication. They even published a piece of my writing inside....nice!

Teen Kitten and Middle Kitten are away this week. My little sweethearts are camping up high in the snowy mountains. They took good gear but I still worry. "I believe the most important single thing, beyond discipline and creativity is daring to dare” Maya Angelou

Maya has a point. I'm glad they dared to go. In the mean time my littlest kitten and I are spending just about every second together. We've collaborated on some artwork that is pretty nice. Actually, I think she's brilliant. She is a focused little artist. She draws from her imagination like most kids, but she also uses scrap. She picks up interesting detail, more sophisticated than any other kid in her age range I've ever seen. Ya, I'm bragging. We stretched muslin and are doing these delicate little drawings of 'earthly delights". Our earthly delights are not the same as the earthly delights of Hieronymus Bosch. I'll post more on that soon.
